3 Things to Consider Before Replacing Your UPS Battery
Why are Batteries So Critical for UPS?
Given our increasing reliance on technology and power, having an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) has become a necessity. At the same time, battery plays an important role that determines whether UPS functions properly or not. In many cases, a high percentage of UPS failure are caused by related battery issues.
How Exactly Does the Battery Work in the UPS?
When utility power is normal, the UPS provides power to connected equipment, and charges its internal battery. When the utility power fails or when it is outside specified tolerances for the UPS, the UPS switches to battery mode and provides power through its battery for its connected equipment until the end of battery runtime or when the utility power is back to normal.
When is it Necessary to Replace Your Battery?
UPS batteries generally last about 3 - 5 years, but real service life depends on various factors, including temperature, voltage, maintenance, age, utility power quality, fully discharged time, and so on. There are three main conditions that may lead to battery replacement.
UPS Alarm
Different alarms and notifications can be provided by the UPS to suggest users to change the battery. Depends on the UPS's specification, these notification can be delivered by different forms such as audible alarms, LED indicator, LCD display and management software.
Usage Conditions
Several circumstances may lead battery to become less effective and reduce longevity, such as ambient temperature higher than 25°C (77°F), batteries discharging/recharging repeatedly, batteries stored longer than 6 months from date of purchase.
Battery Performance
When the battery can no longer supply at least 80% of its rated capacity or self-discharging earlier than usual, most of the batteries' performance will normally begin to drop very quickly at this point, therefore replacing the battery may be a good option.
