UPS Buying Guide
The purpose of the buying guide
- Help users understand what a UPS is
- Introduce different types of UPS
- Explain key criteria for selecting a UPS
What is a UPS?
UPS, which stands for Uninterruptible Power Supply, provides power for equipment to safely shut down during a power outage. It protects connected equipment from unexpected power outage that could cause serious business disruption or data loss.
Here are some main benefits of the UPS:
- Provides Battery Backup
- Safeguards Valuable Data
- Keeps Equipment Online
- Protects from Surges and Spikes
- Offers Clean and Stable Power
How does a UPS work?
When utility power is normal, the UPS provides power to connected equipment, and charges its internal battery.
When utility power fails, the UPS provides power through its battery for its connected equipment.
UPS Solutions
Home
The UPS provides backup power protection for electronic devices at home, preventing damages caused by unexpected power failures, voltage fluctuations or other power issues.
Office
In an office environment with numerous business-critical devices, the UPS delivers reliable office solutions that safeguard important data and maintain network connectivity.
Data Center
To satisfy data center's large demand of power, the UPS helps to ensure maximum uptime of mission-critical equipment and services while reducing operating cost with energy-efficient technology.
UPS Selection Criteria
A few key points shall be considered when selecting a UPS based on individual needs.
The Basic Requirements
-
How much power is needed?
The UPS must be able to handle the total power load of the equipment that requires protection. It is recommended that the output watt capacity of the UPS is 20 - 30% higher than the total wattage of its connected equipment.
-
How much runtime is needed?
Runtime is the amount of time the UPS can provide battery power for connected equipment when utility power fails. Note that adding more equipment loads will shorten the runtime.
-
How much capacity is needed?
As business expands, more equipment may need power protection, thus UPS capacity may need to be reserved at first. Use the equipment's power load and required runtime to calculate the suitable reserved capacity.
The Specifications
Choose a UPS with voltage input that is equivalent to the input power of the equipment. The applicable UPS voltage differs by country, so it is vital to select the UPS with the corresponding voltage level.
Select the topology based on power needs. There are Standby, Line-Interactive or Online topology for UPS. The decision depends on the level of power protection and energy efficiency required.
Consider where to install the UPS, then decide on the form factors catering to the installation requirement. Make sure the chosen UPS is able to fit in the space of usage.
Outlet types will vary according to different regions; make sure to select the appropriate one for your UPS systems.
Popular Features
The UPS provides Pure Sine Wave output for sensitive electronics that require smoother and cleaner input source. It ensures efficient system operation which helps to reduce power consumption and save electricity costs.
When incoming utility power has fluctuations, this function stabilizes the output power by regulating low voltages and over voltages without the need of switching to battery mode.
The LCD readout displays clear system information, such as power, battery and load status. It also features an intuitive interface, allowing easy monitoring and management.
This feature allows users to safely replace batteries without having to shut down the UPS and all connected equipment, ensuring maximum power availability.
In order to prolong system runtime during power interruption, the EBM can be installed together with the UPS. CyberPower's built-in charger allows batteries to return to full capacity more rapidly.
By installing a SNMP card on the UPS, users can monitor and manage the system through the network. Users can also perform management tasks such as UPS scheduled shutdown, startup and reboot.
UPS Management
Local Management
Remote Management
Local Management
The LCD readout displays clear system information, such as power status, battery status, load status and more. It also features a user-friendly and intuitive interface, allowing users to easily manage and monitor the entire system.
Remote Management
By inserting the card into the SNMP/HTTP network slot on the UPS, users can remotely monitor and control the devices. They can also perform management tasks including scheduled shutdowns, startups, and reboots.
The LCD readout displays clear system information, such as power status, battery status, load status and more. It also features a user-friendly and intuitive interface, allowing users to easily manage and monitor the entire system.
The PowerPanel Management Software can monitor, manage or perform graceful system shutdown for the UPS systems. It provides local and remote management to satisfy various management needs and applications.
Different power issues that can be solved by different types of UPS topology:
*
UPS is available in various shapes and sizes - Desktop, Rack, Tower and Rack/Tower convertible.
Desktop UPS can be installed on the desk. Some models which come with mounting slots, can also be mounted on the wall.
Rack UPS can fitted into standard rack enclosure for office, server room or data center application.
Tower UPS can be placed on the ground, shelf or desk to protect devices in home or office.
The UPS can be installed in standard rack enclosure or in tower mode based on the user’s requirements.
